Touch 6: Life – 触覚 6:人生

I’ve heard, on numerous occasions, that life keeps getting better the older you become.  While I don’t think I have the years to back this up yet (almost), I do think that there is some truth behind this adage.  The more and more I think about it I begin to realize something.  For me, this saying isn’t implying that the events in your life keep getting better but rather that the emotions to these events keep getting more intense.  Not that a young person can’t fully comprehend emotions -well, that’s kind of true-  but there’s something that develops with each new experience. We gain a different insight into emotions being able to compare, contract and rehash everything that we have felt before.

For me, getting older has made the highs higher and the lows lower.  With each new loved ones’ success, marriage, birth; I’m overwhelmed with great happiness.  And conversely, with each new failure, defeat or loss; I’m filled with an intensified devastation.  Often I must remind myself that being able to bear the lows are necessary for us to be able to relish in the highs.

One can not exist without the other.

Recently, I have been touched by the low of a close friend.

Please support her in her fight.

  1. This touched me…

  2. I certainly agree with this! As you know, I have the years behind it to back me up. I spend half my time deliriously happy and the other half indulging my tears. What mood swings? What hormones? At my age??!!! It’s strange to find out about “the inner life of an older person”. . . mine is intense, too.

  3. Thanks Liz. I’m glad you agree! We can’t depend on the events in our lives to shape whether it gets better or not, we have to deal with what we get!

  4. I am very sad to hear about the inspiration for this post. My thoughts are with her.

  5. Jessie- Thanks. I’ll give her a big hug for you. 🙂
