Touch 17 / 触覚 17: Born into Brothels

I’m going to bet that all you hundreds of readers (haha) are still sitting on the edge of your seat with great anticipation waiting to find out what movie I watched last week.  Right?  Well, if you guessed Slumdog Millionaire, you’re wrong, sorry.  Because I already blogged about that movie here.

But if you guessed Born into Brothels, you’re correct! The song I posted last week was not actually from that documentary however its origins are from the same country.

The movie is so touching, a true testament to the power of art.  Stemming from the work (of Zana Briski) displayed in the movie, Kids with Cameras, a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to disadvantaged youth, was started.

Seriously, I can’t speak highly enough and will forever be touched by the work of non-profits that 1) further the knowledge that art is empowering and 2) that helps children.  One day I hope to be a major “mover and shaker” within one of these organizations…

But until then,  my birthday is coming up (the big 30!) and I LOVE the photo below by one of the most talented kids from the movies, Avijit Halder (I believe the link goes to a random child profile, so it might not be Avijit’s).  He’s now a 19-year-old college student at NYU(!), a true success story!

So yeah… hint, hint, wink, wink.

Look at and/or buy prints from the movie here.
