Hearing 3: A.R.Rahman – 聴覚 3: A.R. ラフマーン

このエントリは日本語で書かないのに、A.R. ラフマーンの曲サンプルを聞いてください!それも、日本の映画館にスラムドッグ・ミリオネアを出るとき、絶対に見に行くのにお勧めます。

If you haven’t seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire yet, what are you waiting for?!?! With the Academy Awards just around the corner, you only have a few days left to catch this movie before it sweeps a couple -or more- Oscars off their feet.   Slumdog Millionaire has already won five Critics’ Choice Awards, four Golden Globes and seven BAFTA Awards,  including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay (Adapted) and Best Composer/Score across the board.  Then add the ten Academy Award nominations waiting in the wings, ready to spring out and take everyone by surprise.  I can’t wait.

The movie stands as an impressive testament to overcoming adversity. However, what struck me the most was the score.  I’m sure almost everyone by now has heard the Song, Jai Ho followed closely by O Saya (both songs and an short interview can be heard here) but I wanted to delve a bit more into the music of A.R. Rahman.

What I find I like most about Rahman’s talent is his ability to extend across and through cultures and use technological advancements to his advantage.  He can masterfully write music that respects the traditions of a culture, while adding his own cultural input and contemporary musical visions to the music.

Good luck at the Oscars, Mr. Rahman!

I have picked out a few songs to give you a sampling of his work. (I couldn’t choose just one!) Please enjoy and support artists by purchasing their music.
